An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was making an early morning withdrawal at an outside ATM machine when he was confronted by an armed gunman.  The confrontation led to an officer-involved shooting when the suspect attempted to rob the deputy who later described the robber to a police sketch artist. 

Three days after the robbery, Westminster Police detectives received a phone call from Newport Beach Police officers who had a suspect in-custody on unrelated drug charges.  During a search the suspect, Newport Beach officers found a cut out Orange County Register newspaper article about the robbery.  The suspect was later identified by the victim and charged with several counts of armed robbery.
