Crime(s): Attempted Murder
Agency: La Habra Police Department
An off-duty Los Angeles
County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped his car in the city of La Habra to check a flat tire when he was confronted by an armed suspect.
The suspect intended to rob him of any valuables, but instead he shot the deputy when he saw his off-duty weapon inside his waistband.
The suspect fled and the deputy was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. SketchCop Michael Streed was asked to
interview the deputy while he was in the hospital recovering from his wound even though he had already just been administered morphine.
SketchCop Michael Streed was racing against the clock while the deputy was fading fast. The sketch was successfully completed,
and it aided in the suspect’s arrest. What was most interesting was the perception of a una-brow depicted in the sketch and
a cleft in the suspect’s chin. In reality, the suspect only had thick, dark eyebrows and a ‘stinger’ under his lip rather than
a cleft. This was a good lesson in perception and how trauma and medication can sometimes affect a person’s memory.
All
Suspects are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty.
